Matt Bullas, a UK entrepreneur and expert SEO consultant, has recently been declared as one of the winners at the prestigious Cheshire Business Awards 2011.

Matt Bullas was victorious in the ‘Bentley Motors Young Business Person of the Year’ category where he was shortlisted alongside two other exceptional candidates. He is currently the Managing Director of Click Consult, a premier UK search marketing agency with a multi-million pound turnover and an extensive and high-profile client portfolio. Click Consult were also winners of the ‘EA Technology Large Business of the Year’ category at the Cheshire Business Awards 2011.

Nominees for the Young Business Person of the Year award had to be aged under 35, to have displayed significant career progression alongside expert leadership and management skills. Matt Bullas was adjudged to have excelled in each of these requirements, resulting in him scooping the award despite facing stiff competition from the other shortlisted business men.

Matt Bullas is an expert in online and digital marketing and technology, and his commercial experience has enabled him to consistently devise and execute highly efficient business plans, resulting in several successful business ventures over the past decade. He believes that the accolade gained from the 2011 Cheshire Business Awards can help him to further develop his already impressive business portfolio.

“I am incredibly proud to be the winner of the Bentley Motors Young Business Persons of the Year award. The Cheshire Business Awards are held in high-esteem by regional business people, and to be recognised by my peers is truly humbling.” said Matt Bullas. “In my career so far I have had the opportunity to work with some fantastically talented people, and as I’ve learnt from them, I hope to pass on the benefits of my own experiences to others too, now and in the future. While this award has been a fantastic achievement personally, it has only inspired me to work harder and to prepare for the challenges that lie ahead.”

OK, we all know that the shift is now gone to online and has done for many years, and as part of this shift brands are experiencing higher sales online than ever, but the question is how much are they really missing out on? And is the focus lost because there brand generates so much sales they are blinded when it comes to Non Brand sales.

The purpose of this blog is to focus on two aspects, SEO & site architecture.

SEO Companies who bring on brand names and then work on a site with authority but poor structure, targeting and strategy must be gleaming with joy, the difference is many site owners just do not have a clue about how much they are actually missing out on because of simple straight forward understandings of site structure and SEO (in essence how Google ranks better structured sites).

As an example I am going to use Littlewoods, this category is bedding:

http://www.littlewoods.com/home-garden/e/b/3279/s/bestsellers,0.end;jsessionid=E78446A17865DD016097AFFC958F1E2C.fts055:-7?bc=23300050&cm_re=Homepage-_-Header-_-Zone+Home-and-Garden

For the term “Bedding” they do not rank in the top 100 of Google.co.uk.

<img src="http://www.mattbullas.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/littlewoods.png" alt=Littlewoods" />

So what do we take from this, is it just a one off? Or is this apparent across the pages within the website?
After checking a number of pages and terms it appears to be the case across the website.
So when we look at the competition what are they doing differently that in Google’s eyes they are deemed to be more relevant to the searcher for bedding than Littlewoods.
Let’s look at the number one ranking company for Bedding which is Dunelm Mill, what are they doing right, I am going to give you the basics;

URL structure, let’s compare their URL to Littlewoods: http://www.dunelm-mill.com/shop/bedding/ This URL is friendly not only to searchers but also to search engines, compare it to the Littlewoods URL and you will.

Relevance of landing page, the category sections on the landing page of Dunelm Mill link out to relevant sub sections all relating or sub relating to the generic product offering of Bedding, you will see that many of the category links from the Littlewoods page go to for example Garden Furniture, the search engines will deem the page to be less relevant based on the content of the ranking page and where that page subsequently links to.

Dunelm strategy however in terms of keyword targeting could be better, they seem to target just the one term Bedding and yes they do rank 1 but they could also be ranking for some associated 2 term phrases, Littlewoods are targeting more terms but there is to much else wrong for Google to rank the page.

Just imagine if the strategy, structure and SEO was correct through an entire site with 100’s of categories, 1000’s of sub categories and god knows how many products, how quick would they rank and how much would the sales increase by?

If I were a brand owner I would utilise the power of my website by filtering the above points through the entire site because the website will carry enough authority to start ranking straight away when these methods are executed.

For my first tip blog I am going to mention social media, and this is my social media tip of the day. Depending on your objective being personal or business your social media strategy may vary, however I will take a business as an example and give my core tips to setting up and maintain a basic social media campaign.

Since the boom of sites such as facebook and twitter, Social Media has put a whole new spin on the power users have towards a business, service or product, for example, several years ago, if you bought something online, it didn’t turn up, you couldn’t get a refund or replacement what could you do? Pick up the phone and complain, send countless emails and end up very frustrated. The current climate allows much more freedom of information and more than ever individuals share their experiences, good and bad, in return it is crucial that a business manages these experiences, if you don’t you could pay the price for people building up a picture of how good or bad you are at what you do before you know it.

If you are a business, especially a brand or a business that operates online, these are my top tips;

Create and focus your efforts on the core Social Media Platforms being facebook and twitter

Publish regular information on a regular basis that will benefit your fans and followers, for example if you are an online retailer you may wish to promote your special offers and new product releases.

Create incentives for your fans and followers, offer competitions and unique discounts for people that take the time to follow or fan you

Keep it consistent, if you are not consistent people will lose interest and stop following you or being your fan and move to a brand or website that updates them on what they are looking for and keeps there interest

Monitor your mentions, use software that can monitor your brand mentions across the web and social media portals regardless of if it is good or bad, one bad mention could spiral into a post appearing in the search results for your brand name, and for example if you do have a bad brand mention it enables you to deal with it and respond, the same as responding and thanking your good mentions.
